What laboratory studies suggest
CO₂ around respiratory particles may affect droplet chemistry and the rate at which SARS-CoV-2 loses infectivity after exhalation.
Big news: Maxairea is nominated for the KVK Innovation Top 100 2026 — voting is open until 19 October
A modelled result and a measured result are not the same thing, and we do not present them as though they were. This page explains how we label evidence, how we verify performance, and who we work with.
Engineering calculation for high-occupancy buildings with long operating hours. Actual result depends on occupancy, climate, HVAC configuration and current performance.
Engineering calculation of outdoor-air volume required to hold the same CO₂ target with Clever Air Care in operation.
Hard control floor enforced by the Maxairea controller. Ventilation is never reduced below this level.
Installed in the technical room, into an existing air-handling unit. Demonstrated at TEMA Fine Food and SPIE.
In 2026, TNO reviewed a number of scientific publications for Maxairea on the potential relationship between indoor CO₂ concentrations and the infectivity of SARS-CoV-2 in aerosols. The key findings and referenced scientific sources are summarised in the accompanying reports.
CO₂ around respiratory particles may affect droplet chemistry and the rate at which SARS-CoV-2 loses infectivity after exhalation.
Particle size, relative humidity, trace gases and real-building conditions can change the same chemistry and may weaken, strengthen or reverse the observed effect.
The possible effect is a testable research question requiring independent validation. It is not a demonstrated infection-control benefit in occupied buildings.
Ventilation and particle removal remain the core controls for airborne exposure. CO₂ should not be used on its own as proof of a high ventilation rate or as an infection-safety threshold.
Before anything is installed we measure CO₂ concentration, airflow and HVAC energy consumption under normal operation. That baseline is the reference for every later claim.
Occupancy, operating hours, ventilation design and climate feed an engineering calculation of achievable outdoor-air and energy reduction for your building — not a generic figure.
After commissioning, the same parameters are measured again over a representative period and compared against the baseline.
Where a project supports it, results are reviewed with research and engineering partners before publication.
Maxairea develops and demonstrates Clever Air Care with research institutes, building-services contractors and controls specialists working on live installations.
Moved from open-window ventilation to a mechanical system with energy recovery, combined with the Maxairea Clever Air Care System. Smart control developed with MESH Building Management Solutions. Real-world monitoring shows indoor CO₂ remained below 800 ppm for 99.98% of measured time, while the building energy label improved from G to C and total energy use fell from 643 to 224.86 kWh/m²·yr.
The Maxairea Clever Air Care System was added to an existing air-handling unit to improve indoor air quality and reduce energy consumption. Initial results indicate a strong positive impact on IAQ, HVAC energy use, and total cost of ownership. Full results to be announced with the SPIE Netherlands team.
The Maxairea Clever Air Care System is being installed inside an existing ventilation unit at The Green Village, TU Delft. Delivered in collaboration with InnovationQuarter, Orange Climate, Verkerk, Van Dorp Installaties, Warmtebouw, Priva and TNO. Commissioning planned for the first half of October 2026.
Nelissen Engineering has incorporated Maxairea’s CO₂ capture technology into the Bisonspoor Police Station design. By treating CO₂ directly, the concept enables approximately 33% lower design airflow, smaller ducts and air-handling capacity, and an estimated 20 kW reduction in both heating and cooling capacity. The project shows Maxairea’s broader value: improving indoor air quality while reducing system size, energy demand and overall building-services costs from the design stage onward.
If you need to defend a saving to an auditor, asset manager or energy consultant, we will walk you through exactly how it is measured before you commit to anything.
